Literature Text

I woke up to an empty bed
You weren't there and the moon told me you had escaped
I was lost; this city is much too big for me
The skycrappers loom over my head

And the lights reflect in my eyes
Fluorescent, bright and bold
And the people come and go
Elbows digging into ribs, shouldering their way across the crowd
But I stand there alone and I watch the rain fall
Puddles of water painted the color of neon signs
A raindrop falls and the ripples dance
Or was it the tears rolling down my face?

A city that never sleeps, they say, is the place of dreams
I lied awake till the clock sang midnight
Till dawn lit up the sky
But the dreams never came
They stayed away, part of a blurry past that haunts my smiles

So darling, did you know?
When they ask what my favourite words is
I always answer you.
